Vanilla planifoliaの写真

ラン科バニラ属のつる性の着生ラン。香料バニラの主要な原料となる作物で、メキシコから中央アメリカ・南米北部の熱帯林に自生し、緑色の多肉質な茎で他の樹木をよじ登る。

説明

気根を出しながら他の樹木や支柱をよじ登る常緑のつる性ラン。緑色で多肉質の長い茎に、厚く光沢のある楕円形〜披針形の葉を互生する。淡い黄緑色の花は一日でしぼむ短命な花だが、受粉に成功すると細長い莢（さや）状の果実（いわゆるバニラビーンズ）を実らせ、発酵と乾燥からなるキュアリング処理を経てはじめて特有の甘い芳香を放つ。原産地では特定のハチ類が送粉するとされ、自然の送粉者がいない栽培地では人工授粉によって結実させる。

生育環境

メキシコから中央アメリカ、南米北部にかけての高温多湿な熱帯低地林に自生する。樹木の幹をよじ登る半着生植物として、日当たりのよい林縁や二次林に生育する。
