A climbing epiphytic orchid native to the tropical forests of Mexico, Central America and northern South America, and the primary botanical source of natural vanilla flavouring.

Description

An evergreen climbing orchid that scrambles up trees and supports by means of aerial roots. It bears long, fleshy green stems and thick, glossy elliptic-to-lanceolate leaves arranged alternately. Its pale greenish-yellow flowers last only a single day, but once pollinated they develop into slender pod-like capsules (the 'vanilla beans' of commerce) that acquire their characteristic sweet aroma only after curing — a process of fermentation and drying. In its native range it is thought to be pollinated by specific bees; in cultivation, where natural pollinators are absent, the flowers are hand-pollinated to set fruit.

Habitat

Native to hot, humid tropical lowland forest from Mexico through Central America to northern South America. It grows as a hemiepiphytic vine, climbing tree trunks along bright forest edges and in secondary forest.
