ツユクサ科トラデスカンティア属の匍匐性多年草。緑・白・紫の美しい斑入りの葉を持ち、観葉植物として広く栽培される。メキシコからコロンビアの熱帯林が原産。

説明

這い性または下垂する多年草で、長く細い茎を伸ばして密なマット状に広がる。葉は卵形で長さ4〜10cm、表面は緑色に2本の銀白色の縦縞が入り、裏面は一様な深紫赤色（マゼンタ）を呈する。日光に長時間暴露されると斑が褪せ、全体が紫色になる。葉鞘は薄く半透明、長さ8〜12mm。花は3弁の桃色〜紫色の小花を咲かせ、雄しべ6本は紫色の毛で覆われる。タコ足状の根を出し、節から容易に発根して繁殖する。観葉植物として非常に人気が高く、グラウンドカバーとしても利用されるが、旺盛な繁殖力から侵入種としても知られる。

生育環境

メキシコから中央アメリカ、コロンビアにかけての湿潤な熱帯林が原生育地。低地の湿林や藪地、河岸の岩場など、日当たりの良い場所から半日陰の場所、標高2000m以下（主に低海拔）で生育する。石の上や林縁に自生し、密な群落を形成する。
