A creeping herbaceous perennial in the spiderwort family, prized for its zebra-striped foliage with green, silver and purple tones. Native to Mexico to Colombia, widely cultivated as a houseplant and groundcover.

Description

A low-growing, slightly succulent, perennial herbaceous plant that forms dense mats through creeping stems. Leaves are ovate, 4 to 10 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm wide, with the upper surface showing green older growth and purple new growth parallel to the central axis, plus two broad silver-colored stripes on the outer edges. The lower leaf surface presents a deep uniform magenta. Leaf sheaths are thin and translucent, 8 to 12 mm long. Flowers are three-petaled, pink to purple, 5 to 9 mm long, with six violet-haired stamens. Roots form at nodes on contact with moist substrate, enabling easy propagation. Grown for its fast growth and attractive foliage; used as a groundcover in warm winter climates and as a houseplant elsewhere. Can become invasive in suitable conditions.

Habitat

Native to wet tropical and rainforest thickets from Mexico through Central America to Colombia. Often grows on stones in shady and open areas or on river banks at altitudes of 2000 meters or below, mainly at lower elevations. Forms dense colonies in thickets, often on riverbanks or rocks.
