Codiaeum variegatumの写真

トウダイグサ科クロトン属（Codiaeum）の常緑低木または小高木。ニューギニアからマレーシア・インドネシア・フィリピン・南西太平洋の熱帯域に自生し、葉に赤・黄・緑・橙の斑入りが入る個体が選別・交配され、観葉植物として世界中で親しまれる。

説明

常緑の低木〜小高木で、高さ1〜3mになる（原生地では稀に6mに達する）。葉は互生し、披針形・倒披針形・線形・三裂などの個体変異が大きく、長さ8〜30cm、革質で光沢がある。原種の葉は概ね緑色に黄色や橙色の斑が入る程度だが、園芸選抜された個体（かつては var. pictum としてまとめられた一群）は赤・紫・黄・橙・緑・白の階調が入り組み、葉形も螺旋状・細裂・幅広など極めて多様。花は雌雄同株で、上部に雌花、下部に雄花をつける白または黄白色の総状花序を葉腋に出すが、観賞価値は葉にある。乳液（トウダイグサ科に特有）を出す。熱帯の湿潤林に生育し、温暖・多湿・十分な光を好む。

生育環境

マレーシア地域（インドネシアのジャワ・マルク・スラウェシ、フィリピン）、ビスマルク諸島（パプアニューギニア）、ソロモン諸島、バヌアツ、フィジー、オーストラリア北東部クイーンズランド湿潤熱帯域に自生する。POWOは原生範囲を 'Malesia to SW. Pacific' と要約し、湿潤熱帯生息域（wet tropical biome）に限定する。
