An evergreen shrub or small tree in the family Euphorbiaceae, native to Malesia and the south-western Pacific. Wild plants carry modest yellow-orange variegation; horticulturally selected forms (formerly grouped as var. pictum) span red, purple, yellow, orange, green and white in a wide variety of leaf shapes, making Croton one of the most widely grown tropical foliage plants.

Description

Evergreen shrub or small tree, typically 1–3 m tall (occasionally reaching 6 m in optimal native sites). Leaves alternate, lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate or linear, sometimes three-lobed, 8–30 cm long, leathery and glossy; wild plants are largely green with limited yellow or orange variegation, while horticultural selections can combine red, purple, yellow, orange, green and white in broadly varied leaf shapes (broad, narrow, twisted, oak-leaf, spiral). Plants are monoecious, bearing racemose inflorescences of small whitish or pale yellow flowers in the upper leaf axils, with female flowers above and male flowers below; ornamental value lies in the foliage rather than the flowers. Like other Euphorbiaceae it exudes a milky latex when cut. Native to wet tropical forest where it prefers warmth, high humidity and bright light, and is widely cultivated worldwide as a houseplant or ornamental shrub in frost-free climates.

Habitat

Native to the Malesian region (Jawa, Maluku, Sulawesi in Indonesia; the Philippines), the Bismarck Archipelago (Papua New Guinea), Solomon Is., Vanuatu, Fiji, and the wet tropics of north-eastern Queensland in Australia. POWO summarises the range as 'Malesia to SW. Pacific' and restricts the species to the wet tropical biome.
