Aloe veraの写真

ススキノキ科（旧ユリ科）アロエ属の多肉植物。ロゼット状に広がる肉厚の葉には苦味のある凝胶質が含まれ、やけどやスキンケアに利用される。原産地はオマーンのハジャル山地とされるが、詳細は不明確。

説明

常緑の多年生多肉植物で、根元からロゼット状に広がる剣形の肉厚な葉を特徴とする。葉の縁には小さな棘が並び、葉の内部は透明な粘液質のゲルで満たされている。このゲルは多糖類、酵素、ビタミン、ミネラルを含み、やけどの治療、スキンケア、下剤として古くから利用されている。乾燥した環境に適応し、室内でも育てやすい人気の観葉植物。かつてはユリ科（Liliaceae）に分類されていたが、分子系統解析の結果ススキノキ科（Asphodelaceae）へ移された。薬用および園芸用として世界各地へ持ち出され、多くの熱帯・亜熱帯地域で人為的に導入・帰化している。

生育環境

原産地はオマーン北東部のハジャル山地（Hajar Mountains）とされるが、自生地の詳細は不明確。乾燥した岩がちの環境や砂漠の低木地帯に生育し、乾燥と貧栄養土壌に耐える性質を持つ。
