A succulent perennial in the family Asphodelaceae (formerly Liliaceae), genus Aloe. Fleshy, rosette-forming leaves contain a bitter gel used for burns and skincare. Native range is uncertain, reported as the Hajar Mountains in northern Oman.

Description

An evergreen succulent perennial characterized by fleshy, sword-shaped leaves arranged in a basal rosette. The leaf margins bear small teeth, and the leaf interior is filled with a clear, mucilaginous gel containing polysaccharides, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. This gel has been used for millennia to treat burns, as a skincare ingredient, and as a laxative. Highly tolerant of drought and poor soils, it is a popular and forgiving houseplant. Formerly placed in the lily family (Liliaceae), molecular phylogenetic analysis moved it to Asphodelaceae. Cultivated for medicinal and ornamental purposes for thousands of years, it has been widely introduced and naturalized across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Habitat

Native range is reported as the Hajar Mountains in northeastern Oman, though wild origins remain uncertain. Grows in dry, rocky environments and desert shrubland, adapted to withstand drought and nutrient-poor soils.
