A climbing epiphytic vine in the family Araceae, native to tropical forests from Mexico through Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America. Noted for glossy, heart-shaped leaves. Contains calcium oxalate crystals.

Description

An epiphytic or lithophytic climbing vine that ascends trees and rocks using aerial roots. Leaves are cordiform, leathery, and glossy, reaching 10–30 cm in length at maturity. Flowers infrequently, producing a white spathe and spadix. All parts contain irritant calcium oxalate crystals; skin contact and ingestion can cause mucosal irritation and gastrointestinal distress.

Habitat

Native to humid tropical forests from southern Mexico through Central America, northern South America, and the West Indies. Occurs from forest understory to mid-canopy, attaching to trunks and rocks via aerial roots. Requires high humidity and is relatively intolerant of prolonged drought.
