A climbing aroid houseplant with glossy, often yellow- or white-variegated heart-shaped leaves, native to French Polynesia (the Society Islands) and widely naturalized across the tropics.

Description

An evergreen climber that clings to trees and surfaces with aerial roots. Juvenile plants bear small, entire heart-shaped leaves, while mature climbing stems can produce much larger leaves that become pinnately lobed. Popular cultivars show yellow or white variegation. It flowers only rarely and seldom outside its native range. Like other aroids, all parts contain calcium oxalate crystals and are irritating if chewed.

Habitat

In its native Society Islands it is recorded from moist hill forest at around 500 m elevation. As an escaped ornamental it establishes on trees, forest edges, and disturbed ground across many tropical and subtropical regions.
