An evergreen shrub to tree in the family Asparagaceae, native to tropical Africa. Its glossy, thick leaves and fragrant white flowers make it a popular houseplant worldwide.

Description

A single-stemmed evergreen shrub to tree, reaching 3–6 m in height, occasionally exceeding 10 m. The thick, woody stem bears a dense rosette of glossy, lanceolate to oblanceolate leaves, 60–100 cm long and 5–10 cm wide. Flowering is rare in cultivation, but in its native habitat it produces panicles of strongly fragrant white flowers that open at dusk, blooming only once every several years—hence the common name 'fragrant dracaena.' Widely grown as a houseplant under names such as 'corn plant' and 'cornstalk plant,' it is one of the most popular indoor foliage plants. Cultivars formerly treated as Dracaena deremensis (e.g., 'Janet Craig', 'Warneckei', 'Massangeana') are now included within D. fragrans.

Habitat

Native to tropical forests across West, Central and East Africa. Occurs in forest understorey, forest edges, thickets, savanna, and rocky outcrops from sea level up to 2250 m elevation. Adapted to seasonally dry tropical climates and tolerant of low light.
