Photograph of Chlorophytum comosum

A perennial herbaceous plant of the Asparagaceae family, known for its narrow arching leaves and plantlets that form on the ends of runners. Native to tropical and southern Africa.

Description

A clump-forming perennial with fleshy, tuberous roots. Leaves are linear, 20-60 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, arranged in a basal rosette. The inflorescence reaches 30-75 cm in length, often branched and arching downward, producing small white flowers. Plantlets (vegetative propagules) develop from bracts, enabling pseudovivipary. Widely cultivated as a houseplant; variegated cultivars like 'Vittatum' and 'Variegatum' are especially popular.

Habitat

Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from West Tropical Africa to Cameroon and from Ethiopia to Southern Africa. Grows in shaded understory of evergreen forests, riverine forests, rock crevices along streams, sometimes epiphytically, from sea level to 2450 m elevation.

A matching climate does not mean the plant can grow there. Range limits are also set by things other than climate — dispersal history, soils, competition. Source: Beck et al. (2023), CC BY 4.0 (observed period 1991–2020).
