Tillandsia usneoidesの写真

パイナップル科（ブロメリア科）の着生植物。米国南東部から南米アルゼンチン・チリまで広く自生し、木の枝に糸状の葉を長く垂れ下げて房状に群生する。和名の通り真正の苔（モス）ではなく、サルオガセに似た姿のラン・バイオーム着生植物。

説明

茎は極めて短縮し、線形の葉を1〜2mの鎖状に連なって垂れ下げる着生植物。葉表面には吸水・吸収を担う灰白色の鱗片毛（トリコーム）が密生し、根は附着用に退化して養分吸収を行わない。雌雄同体で、葉腋から短い花序を伸ばし黄緑〜淡紫色の三弁花を1〜数個開くが、開花は不規則で目立たない。耐寒性のある系統と熱帯系の系統があり、米国南東部ではオークなどの樹冠に灰色のカーテンのように垂れ下がる風景が有名。真正の苔（蘚苔類）ではなくパイナップルと同じブロメリア科に属し、着生・気中の養分水で生育するストレス環境への適応としての形態とされる。

生育環境

低地から亜高地の湿性林・二次林・サバンナ・沼沢林などで、樹木の枝や電線などに着生する。米国南東部からメキシコ・中米を経て南米全域の熱帯・亜熱帯にかけて広く分布し、寒冷地を除く南北アメリカ大陸の広域に自生する。湿度の高い環境を好むが、トリコームによる吸水と耐乾性により一時的な渇水にも強い。
