Selenicereus undatusの写真

サボテン科ヘンケイサボテン（クジャクサボテン）属（Selenicereus）の着生・蔓性サボテン。メキシコからホンジュラス原産で、夜咲きの巨大な白花と赤紫色の食用果実（ドラゴンフルーツ／ピタヤ）で知られる。果樹として熱帯・亜熱帯の世界中で栽培される。

説明

根着きまたは樹木・岩に着生する蔓性（攀縁性）サボテン。茎は太く3翼のある緑色の節で、気根を出しながら他物に登り、長さ数メートルに達する。刺座（areole）には短い毛と小さな刺を1〜3本持つことが多い。花は夜咲きで長さ25〜30cmの大型の白花（夜行性のコウモリやガが送粉者）、外花被片は黄緑〜赤みのある色。果実は楕円形で赤紫色（稀黄色）の果皮に緑色の鱗片状の苞があり、果肉は白または赤紫で黒い小種子が多数埋まる。果肉は甘く、生食・ジュース・デザートに使われる。POWOは本種を 'succulent epiphyte' とし、seasonally dry tropical biome に生育すると記述する。長期にわたり果樹として栽培されてきたため、原産地の正確な境界には議論がある（review.unresolved参照）。

生育環境

POWO は自生範囲を「メキシコからホンジュラス」と記述し、 WGSRPD level-3 では Mexico Central / Mexico Gulf / Mexico Northeast / Mexico Southeast / Mexico Southwest（メキシコ国内の5地域）と Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras を挙げる。季節的乾燥のある熱帯林で、樹木の幹や岩上に着生し、または地上から攀縁する。長期間の栽培拡散により帰化分布は熱帯・亜熱帯の広範囲に及ぶ。
