Ficus elasticaの写真

クワ科イチジク属の大型常緑高木。厚く光沢のある革質の葉で知られる観葉植物で、南アジア〜東南アジアの熱帯林に自生する。

説明

幹や枝から気根を垂らして育つ半着生の高木で、原生地では高さ数十メートルに達する。厚く楕円形で光沢のある革質の葉を互生し、新芽は赤みを帯びた托葉鞘に包まれて展開する。全体に白い乳液を含み、かつては天然ゴム（カウチュク）の採取源として利用された。イチジク属特有の花嚢（無花果状の果実）をつけ、特定のイチジクコバチによって送粉される。丈夫で耐陰性があり室内でもよく育つため、世界中で観葉植物として広く栽培される。

生育環境

南アジアからマレー半島・スマトラ・ジャワにかけての湿潤な熱帯林が原生育地。他の樹木や岩上で発芽して気根を伸ばす締め殺し（絞め殺し）型のイチジクとして生育し、成木は大きな板根と多数の気根を発達させる。
