Epiphyllum oxypetalumの写真

サボテン科クジャクサボテン属（Epiphyllum）の着生サボテン。メキシコ中央部から中米に自生し、白く大きな花を一晩だけ咲かせることで知られる。強い甘い香りを放ち、園芸上「月下美人」「夜の女王」と呼ばれる。

説明

扁平なリボン状の茎を長く伸ばす着生サボテン。茎は節ごとに幅3〜7cmの楕円形で縁が波打ち、分枝しながら半垂れ下がり、長さ1〜3mに達する。棘座は退化して小さな毛状刺のみを持つ。初夏の夜、茎の先端から長さ20〜30cmの大型の花を開く。花被片は純白で外片は線形・内片は広披針形、強い甘い香りを放つ。開花は夜だけで翌朝にはしぼむ「一夜花」。果実は赤みを帯びた楕円形で、種子は黒く粘液質。熱帯〜亜熱帯の二次林や川沿いの森林で樹木の幹や岩上に着生し、半日陰と高湿度を好む。観賞用に世界中で栽培され、東南・南アジアでは「月下美人」「夜の女王」「Queen of the Night」の名で広く親しまれている。

生育環境

メキシコ中央部・メキシコ湾岸・南東部・南西部の各 WGSRPD 地域、ベリーズ、グアテマラ、ホンジュラス、エルサルバドル、ニカラグアにかけて自生する。POWO は自生域を 'Central Mexico to Nicaragua' と要約する。標高の低い熱帯〜亜熱帯の季節的乾燥林や二次林、河畔林で樹幹や岩に着生し、直射を避けた明るい半日陰を好む。
