Dracaena trifasciataの写真

キジカクシ科ドラセナ属（旧サンセベリア属）の常緑多年草。硬く直立する剣形の葉に濃淡の横縞が入る、乾燥に強い丈夫な観葉植物で、西〜中央アフリカの熱帯原産。

説明

地下茎（根茎）で広がる常緑の多年草で、肉厚で硬い剣形の葉を根元から立ち上げる。葉には濃淡のある横縞模様が入り、これが和名『虎の尾』の由来となっている。CAM型光合成を行い、乾燥や弱い光によく耐えるため室内でも育てやすい。かつてはサンセベリア属（Sansevieria）に分類されていたが、分子系統解析の結果2017年にドラセナ属（Dracaena）へ統合された。葉から採れる繊維は弓弦などに利用されてきた歴史を持つ。

生育環境

南ナイジェリアから中央アフリカ西部、タンザニアにかけての、季節的に乾燥する熱帯地域に自生する。水はけのよい岩がちな環境に生育し、乾季の乾燥に耐える性質を持つ。
