Chrysalidocarpus lutescensの写真

ヤシ科の常緑低木。マダガスカル原産で、株元から黄緑色の細い幹を多数叢生させ、羽状の葉を弓なりに広げる。世界で最も人気のある鉢物ヤシの一つ。

説明

株立ち状に多数の茎を伸ばす叢生性のヤシで、屋外では高さ6〜10mに達する。竹に似た黄色〜黄緑色の環のある細い幹と、多数の小葉からなる羽状複葉を持ち、葉柄や若い茎はやや黄色みを帯びる。雌雄同株で黄色い小花を円錐花序につけ、熟すと黄色から紫黒色に変わる小さな実をつける。耐陰性があり室内でもよく育つため、鉢植えの観葉植物として世界中で流通する。原産地では絶滅が危惧される一方、栽培を通じて熱帯各地へ広く帰化している。

生育環境

マダガスカル東部の海岸沿いに帯状に分布する白砂の海岸林（littoral forest）や、砂地・岩上のヒース状植生に自生する。二次林にも残存し局地的に多く見られることがあるが、自生地は狭く限られ、野生では絶滅危惧とされる。
