Alocasia macrorrhizosの写真

サトイモ科クワズイモ属の大型草本。高さ2〜4m（稀に5m以上）に達し、人里近くの湿った場所に自生する。地下茎は食用となるが、生ではシュウ酸カルシウム結晶を含み毒性がある。

説明

太い地下茎から直立した茎を伸ばし、長さ1m以上の巨大な矢尻形の葉を叢生する。葉柄は長さ1m以上に達し、基部は鞘状に茎を抱く。葉身は光沢のある緑色で、先端は尖り、基部は両側に丸く張り出す（cordate基部）。仏炎苞と肉穂花序からなるサトイモ科特有の花をつけ、熟すると赤いベリー状の果実を結ぶ。古くから熱帯アジアで救食作物として栽培され、観賞用としても世界中で広く栽培されている。

生育環境

インドマレシアからオセアニアにかけて分布する。本来の自生地は明確ではなく、先史時代から救食用作物として広く分布し、現在は熱帯域全域に帰化している。湿った溝、荒れ地、路傍、特に人里近くの湿った場所に多い。
